Dr. David Rice
Educational Background
Dr. Rice, originally from Dublin, Ireland earned his medical degree in 1991 from the University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Medicine. He then went on to complete an internship at St. James Hospital in Dublin, Ireland in 1992. Moving to the United States, Dr. Rice completed his general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1999. During his time at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Rice also completed a fellowship in tumor immunology where he examined the possibilities of stimulating T-cells in the immune system to better treat cancer.
Leaving Minnesota, Dr. Rice earned the Chief Resident title while completing another residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center until 2001. Dr. Anderson then joined the faculty at M.D. Anderson as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Rice also has joint appointments with the Ben Taub General Hospital and the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Professional Highlights
Dr. Rice is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgeons, the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, The American Board of Surgery and the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. He also is a member of a number of professional organizations including the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, as well as the Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American College of Chest Physicians.
Today, Dr. Rice holds an Associate Professor Position and Assistant Surgeon at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He also serves as the director of both the Minimally Invasive Surgery and Mesothelioma programs.
Publications
Dr. Rice has published a number of scholarly articles including, "Autotransplantation for central non-small cell lung cancer in patients with poor pulmonary function" and "Induction chemoradiotherapy prior to esophagectomy in elderly patients is not associated with increased morbidity" which both appeared in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He also published, "Risk factors associated with atrial fibrillation after noncardiac thoracic surgery: analysis of 2588 patients" which appeared in the Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery.
Awards
Over the course of his career, Dr. Rice has received a number of awards and honors including the Arthur Ball Memorial Prize in Surgery, graduating with Class II Honors from Trinity College, the Travel Prize from the America Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Kaare K. Nygaard Travel Award for Clinical Research. Most recently, in 2002 Dr. Rice received the Surgery Chief Resident Teaching Award from The University of Texas-Houston Medical School Department of Surgery.
