Dr. Bruce G. Haffty

Overview and Professional Highlights

Dr. Bruce G. Haffty began his medical career at the Yale University School of Medicine. He then went on to complete an internship in internal medicine and a residency in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology at the Yale- New Haven Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Radiology and stayed at Yale until 2004, specializing in therapeutic radiology.

The next year Dr. Haffty moved to New Jersey to take a position as professor and chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UMDNJ's Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Currently, he serves as Associated Director of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick. Dr. Haffty specializes in the study and treatment of breast cancer as well as cancers of the head and neck. He focuses on locating genetic markers in breast cancer and uses these findings to study the management of other cancers including malignant mesothelioma.

Clinical Research and Publications

In his clinical research, Dr. Haffty has authored a number of editorials and has published almost 200 peer-reviewed articles for scholarly journals and books. He once even served as editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. His article, "Prognostic Value of Triple-Negative Phenotype at the Time of Locally Recurrent, Conservatively Treated Breast Cancer," was published August of 2008 in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics. Dr. Haffty also recently published, "Should intensity-modulated radiation therapy be the standard of care in the conservatively managed breast cancer patient?" in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Affiliations

Dr. Haffty is a member of a number of professional organizations and societies including serving as the former president of the Association of Directors of Radiation Oncology Programs from 2000 to 2003 and then Vice-chairman of the ACGME residency review committee for radiation oncology. He is a trustee, assistant executive director and chairman of the Breast Exam Committee of the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Haffty also serves on the Executive Committee of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and holds the position of Chairman of the Residency Review Committee in Radiation Oncology and president of the American Radium Society.

Awards

Dr. Haffty has been honored with a number of awards during the span of his career. He has appeared on the top of the Best Doctors in America list, the as well as America's Top Doctors Lists in Ladies Home Journal and Good Housekeeping magazines.
