University of California San Francisco Medical Center
According to U.S. News & World Report, the UCSF Medical Center now ranks seventh in the U.S. in terms of quality of care and patient satisfaction.
The institution traces its origins all the way back to 1864, when the Toland Medical College was founded. In 1873, it was merged with the University of California to become the system's first Department of Medicine. Over the next nine decades, the department grew to include Schools of Pharmacy and Dentistry, Nursing and a Graduate Studies Department.
One major focus of research at UCSF is gene splicing, which has given birth to a thriving biotech industry. UCSF hospitals employ a staff of 18,600, who serve over a million patients a year. Affiliated institutions include Parnassus, Mount Zion, San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and the Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
UCSF opened a new campus at Mission Bay in 2003, effectively doubling its research facilities, making it the largest biomedical university expansion in the country.
