Jones Payne Group, Inc. to pay $25,000 in asbestos violations

Rhode Island Airport Corporation, O.R. Colan Association and the Jones Payne Group have agreed to pay $25,000 for alleged violations of the federal Clean Air Act and National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Asbestos, reports the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The Jones Payne Group failed to provide the EPA with a written notice of their work prior to demolishing 146 Rhode Island residences. The company demolished the single-family homes in connection with the expansion of the T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Although the demolition and renovation of single-family homes are exempt from Asbestos NESHAP requirements, the demolition work was part of a larger commercial project. Because the commercial project included the demolition of the 146 Rhode Island residences, Jones Payne Group, as well as its correspondents, should have notified the EPA prior to beginning work.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has determined that other work requirements of the Asbestos NESHAP were met, and that no apparent risk to human health was posed. However, asbestos is a highly hazardous material, and because of this, must be properly cared for.

Exposure to the hazardous material has been known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease, which most commonly affects the internal linings of the lung, heart and abdominal cavities.

Due to an extended latency period, patients are most often diagnosed in the later stages of their disease. At such time, mesothelioma clinics suggest patients undergo standard medical treatment.

Jones Payne will pay the entire amount to the EPA.
