Mesothelioma Death in UK Prompts Asbestos Lawsuit
The family of a UK man who died from mesothelioma earlier this year has announced that they will sue the man's former employer. The man, Brian Harrison, worked for 30 years for Moores Furniture Group. Harrison was diagnosed in December of 2008, and died in April of this year despite many attempts to drain fluid from his lungs. He was 71 years old.
Allegedly, Harrison was exposed to asbestos fibers when removing insulation from pipes. Harrison was employed at the Thorp Arch-based firm, which employs more than 1,000 people, between 1967 and 1996. According to the family, Harrison was never warned of the dangers of asbestos exposure, and was never given any protective material or gear. Exposure to asbestos has been linked conclusively with the development of mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive cancer. The cancer can lie dormant for up to five decades before symptoms develop. Once symptoms develop, the average patient has a life expectancy of about 24 months.
The chief executive of Moores, Peter Wilson, responded: "We were all deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Harrison's illness and death. The matters raised on behalf of Mr. Harrison's family and estate are currently under active investigation by our solicitors. In the circumstances, you will appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further at this time."
Son David told reporters: "He had been fit and healthy but once the mesothelioma took hold his condition deteriorated significantly...He was in and out of hospital from the moment he was diagnosed until he passed away and even missed what turned out to be our final family Christmas. It's devastating."
"Dad was a kind and gentle man who didn't deserve to suffer from this terrible illness. We want to find out what happened and try and prevent other people from suffering like he did."
