Indiana officials will move forward with $1 million asbestos removal project

County officials in Indiana preparing to take on an asbestos removal project are facing sticker shock. The project is now expected to cost as much as three times the original estimate. Bret Dodd of RQAW Corp. revealed to the jump in price to the Harrison County Board of Commissioners last week. The asbestos removal project, slated to take place at a former hospital, is the first step in a plan to rehabilitate the hospital into a county government complex in Corydon, Indiana.

"It's on everything," Dodd said of the asbestos. "What they encountered was somewhat different than the (original) report...It's not what we considered in the budget - [but] we can do some things to offset that." According to Dodd, asbestos abatement will likely cost around $900,000. The original estimate in the budget was between $200,000 and $300,000.

Dodd said that according to AsbesTECH Inc., the company that has been working for nearly four weeks to assess the asbestos situation, the site is rife with asbestos. The material was used in a variety of building supplies for many decades, including insulation, adhesives, and tiles. The material is now known to be a major cause of mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the abdominal cavity's lining and major organs. Mesothelioma symptoms can take decades to appear, and the disease can kill within months of the onset of these symptoms.

Dodd says that the jump in cost was not an error, but due to the fact that more detailed examinations of the site uncovered more asbestos than was previously expected. The board has authorized Dodd to send out bid specifications the government complex and the asbestos work.
