First asbestos removal, then demolition in Texas

Over the coming months, the Beaumont, Texas Independent School District plans to raze the existing South Park Middle School and begin constructing a new one. South Park PTA President David Pete told reporters that the news has caused a variety of emotions in students and local parents. "It's kind of mixed emotions because they're very excited, but yet again, a little apprehensive, like 'when is it going to happen?'"

Now, it has been reported that once asbestos abatement is completed at the site, demolition can begin. Asbestos removal must be done prior to demolition to keep the material from becoming airborne. Exposure to airborne asbestos particles can cause health problems ranging from mesothelioma to lung cancer to pleural plaques. Mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive cancer, is caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. The cancer affects thousands of new patients each year, but remains incurable. Sadly, many patients succumb to this cancer within months of being diagnosed.

Asbestos removal should wrap up early next month, with demolition wrapping up 45 days after that. New construction on the school will begin in May. The completed school would open in 2012. The district is still in the midst of selecting a company to hire for the project, and will factor in the company's bid and prestige into their decision. In addition, the company hired for the work would ideally be owned by a minority, according to local news sources. Assistant Superintendent Terry Ingram said, "We want to get the best value for the dollar, at the same time, we want them to do a good job, on time."

"Now they can look forward to a brand new South Park school where the kids can feel good in a learning environment that will be competitive to all the schools in the district," added Mr. Pete, "And now that these things are moving forward.. I think it's gonna do great things for the community."
