Asbestos removal and eventual demolition scheduled in Georgia
In Albany, Georgia, demolition and asbestos removal work are underway at the old Byne Church site. The site is being cleaned up in preparation for the construction of a planned nine million dollar senior citizen complex.
"We are in the process of now taking down some of the buildings that had asbestos and termites and other things," said Kay Hind, who is the Executive Director of the Southwest Georgia Council (SOWEGA). "The roof leaks and it's too small and the kitchen is not really adequate for the number of meals we want to serve," said Hind.
The removal of asbestos is required by law prior to demolition, in order to prevent asbestos from becoming airborne. Asbestos exposure has long been linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare but aggressive form of cancer.
Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, with the disease typically staying dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms. Sadly, most mesothelioma patients pass away within 24 months of being diagnosed.
"We're excited about it [the new senior care complex]. We'll all be in one location, we plan to make it very attractive and very usable and offer lots of programs and services...Just getting all the permission, the environment, the historic society, the city, the state, the federal government...We've just gotten that a couple weeks ago. So I really don't know how long it'll take [to break ground on the project]," said Hind.
