All bricks are heavy duty, but fire bricks are designed to be tough and sturdy even under the worst conditions. As the name implies, they are made to hold up during a fire, and they are used in various industrial settings, chimneys and furnaces. To make the bricks as durable as they need to be, a special type of clay is currently used, but for many years the most active ingredient was asbestos.
Asbestos was popular amid most of the 1900's because it is able to resist and even help contain fire. It is also an extremely strong material that served as an excellent base for firebrick, cement and other similar commodities. Had they known, workers could have at least used mesothelioma prevention measures to protect themselves with masks or other gear, but they were not given the information that could have prevented illnesses and saved lives.
Public outrage grew and more people found out that their health had been put at risk from the products they helped create or purchased. Lawsuits were mounted against companies that made these goods by mesothelioma attorneys, and many of them declared bankruptcy as a result. Ironically, this actually helped the majority of the manufacturers as they were able to reorganize and continue operating free of debt. They were, however, forced to create trust funds that contained millions and even billions of dollars to pay off people who were affected by their products.
