Cheyenne, Wyoming
Lying near the southeast corner of the state, Cheyenne is the capital and largest city of Wyoming with a population of approximately 59,000. Cheyenne serves as county seat of Laramie County and the northern terminus of the fast-growing Front Range Urban Corridor. The most significant employers currently located in Cheyenne are F.E. Cheyenne was founded in 1867 when the Union Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the city as it made its way toward the west coast. Settlement came so quickly that the city earned the nickname “Magic City of the Plains”. By the mid 20th century Cheyenne was home to Frontier Refining Company, an oil and gas exploration company that originally operated under the name of Wainoco Oil. Frontier is still in business today and although headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company maintains refineries in Cheyenne as well as El Dorado, Kansas. Frontier’s Cheyenne refinery has a capacity of 52,000 barrels per day and primary products consist of gasoline, diesel, and asphalt. Modern day Cheyenne houses a multitude of state government offices and the railroad remains a major economic force in the city. Both the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad employ many local residents.
