Casper, Wyoming

Casper, Wyoming

The city of Casper is located in east-central Wyoming at the foot of Casper Mountain, along the banks of the North Platte River. Casper is the second largest city in Wyoming and is nicknamed the "The Oil City", with a population of approximately 54,000 according to the 2010 census. Casper was established in 1888 and named after Fort Caspar, a building constructed for travelers on the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails.

Since the discovery of crude oil in the areas surrounding Casper, the city has maintained its foothold as the regional petroleum industry center. In 1889, oil was discovered in the Salt Creek Oil Field and refineries were quickly erected to cash in on the "black gold". The city has been home to dozens of refineries over the years including Standard Oil Refinery, Texaco Oil Refinery - Casper, Amoco Oil Company, Mobil Oil Company, and Standard Oil Company. Although oil has prominently shaped Casper’s history, it is no longer the focal point of local economy. Today, the development of nearby coal and uranium fields has helped Casper maintain its role as a center in the energy industry.

Casper’s longstanding industrial history places the city in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos containing products have the possibility of developing mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Casper, you may benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
