West Allis, Wisconsin

West Allis is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. It's been noted that the city's name derives from Edward P. Allis, founder of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company in the 19th century. The site of the settlement, which was originally know as North Greenfield, was located west of Allis' plant. In 1906, West Allis was chartered as a city with 2,400 acres of land and a population of 2,306. In 1954, a large annexation occurred, which doubled the total area of the city and led to the development of much of the western portion of West Allis as it is known today. Currently spanning approximately 11 square miles, West Allis is home to more than 61,000 residents.

West Allis is also home to the Wisconsin State Fair Park, which includes the Milwaukee Mile and is the site of the annual Wisconsin State Fair. It can be said that the location of the state fairgrounds in West Allis as well as the establishment of the railroad station and street car lines ensured the foundation for the city's rapid growth and development. It also attracted the attention of manufacturers like the Edward P. Allis Company, the Rosenthal Corn Huskers, the Kearney and Trecker Company, the Fred Prescott Company, and the Kempsmith Company.
