Marinette, Wisconsin

Situated along the shoreline approximately 50 miles north of Green Bay is Marinette, Wisconsin, a city in and the county seat of Marinette County. Home to more than 11,000 residents, Marinette is a family-oriented community with the warmth and charm of a small community, and the modern, progressive thinking of a city on-the-go. The University of Wisconsin-Marinette and Northeast Wisconsin Technical College are located in Marinette. Marinette was incorporated in 1887 and by 1900, it was the tenth largest city in Wisconsin. Major industries at this time included Marinette Iron Works, Marinette Flour Mill, and the Marinette & Menominee Paper Company. The "lumber boom" of the 19th century began to decline, the last lumber company sawmill closed down in 1931. Marinette has continued to take advantage of its location along the Menominee River and Green Bay with major paper mills, and other plants such as Marinette Marine, a major employer in Marinette. Some of the other top employers in the area include Ansul/Tyco, a manufacturer of fire protection systems; and Waupaca Foundry, a leading competitor in agricultural and automotive manufacturing.
