La Crosse, Wisconsin

Situated along the Mississippi River, La Crosse is the largest city on Wisconsin's western border and the county seat of La Crosse County with a population of more than 51,000. Soon after La Crosse was incorporated as a city in 1856, it became a major economic center in the state, particularly in the lumber industry, as logs cut in the interior of the state could be rafted down the Black River toward sawmills built in the city.
