Kenosha, Wisconsin

Located south of Milwaukee on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, Kenosha is a city in and the county seat of Kenosha County. With an estimated population of 97,856, Kenosha is the fourth-largest city in Wisconsin, as well as the fourth-largest city on the western shore of Lake Michigan, following Chicago, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Kenosha was originally named Pike, then after the area became a significant Great Lakes shipping port it was renamed Southport until the growing city was incorporated in 1850 and given its present day name. Today, Kenoshans affectionately refer to their city as "K-Town" and "Keno". Kenosha has 21 locations and three districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Library Park, Third Avenue, and the Civic Center historic districts.
Between 1902 and 1988, Kenosha produced millions of automobiles and trucks under such well-remembered marquees as Jeffery, Rambler, Oldsmobile, Nash Motors, Hudson, LaFayette, and American Motors Corporation (AMC) and Renault. In 1987, Renault sold its controlling interest in AMC to Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler continues to build some of its engines in the original AMC facility today. The AMC Lakefront plant (1960–88), a smaller facility, was demolished in 1990 and was redeveloped into upscale HarborPark, complete with lakeside condominiums, a large recreational marina, water park and promenades, fountains (including the 2007 Christopher Columbus fountain), the Kenosha Public Museum and the Civil War Museum, all connected by the Kenosha Electric Railway streetcar system. Today, tourism has a significant and growing impact on Kenosha's economy; tourism activity and revenue is within the top 20% of all of Wisconsin's 72 counties. Kenosha's largest employer is Kenosha Public Schools, and its largest private employer is Abbott Laboratories.
