Ashland, Wisconsin

Situated at the "top of Wisconsin" on the Lake Superior shoreline is the city of Ashland, which is located near the head of Chequamegon Bay at the junction of U.S. Route 2 and Wisconsin Highway 13. Incorporated as a City on March 25, 1887, Ashland is in Ashland and Bayfield counties with an estimated population of nearly 9,000 people. Lake Superior was instrumental in Ashland’s growth as a City, as it was a means for shipping and receiving logs, processed lumber and iron ore. Currently, except for an occasional shipment of coal, Ashland is no longer used as an industrial port. Instead, this portion of Chequamegon Bay is used primarily for recreational activities such as boating, swimming, and ice-fishing in the winter.

Ashland has become the trading, wholesale, medical, and educational center of northern Wisconsin. Two major manufacturers of products in the community include Bretting Manufacturing (manufactures equipment), and Larson-Juhl (a subsidy of Berkshire Hathaway, manufactures picture frames). Other major employers in Ashland include Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, Northland College, Memorial Medical Center, and Chequamegon Clinic. Northland College and the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute are also located in Ashland.

Use of asbestos containing products was prevalent for years at numerous jobsites in Ashland, particularly at Marathon Paper Mills, Ashland Iron and Steel Company, and American Can Company.
