Wheeling, West Virginia

The city of Wheeling, home to more than 28,000 residents, is located in northern West Virginia on what is referred to as the northern panhandle. Wheeling is a part of the tri-state bordering area of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, also known as the Ohio River Valley Region or "The Ohio Valley". Wheeling is the seat of Ohio County and the principal city of the Wheeling Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1769 and incorporated in 1836, the city of Wheeling was the site of the Wheeling Convention, which established the state of West Virginia; it was also the first capital of West Virginia. Wheeling Jesuit University, a private Jesuit university and the only Catholic college in the state of West Virginia, is located in the city.
In the last decades of the 19th century, iron and steel mills developed on the banks of the Ohio River. The manufacture of cut iron nails strengthened Wheeling’s economy and earned it the nickname, "Nail Capital of the World". Other industries such as glass works and cigar factories also thrived during this time. Through an active industrial economy and large working population, Wheeling became the richest city per capita in America at the end of the 19th century. This is evident in the City’s grand architecture of the mansions which stand today as a testimony to the earlier time of wealth. By 1914, Labelle Iron Works was the last nail producer to operate in Wheeling. In 1920, Wheeling Steel and Iron Company, Wheeling-Glessner, and Labelle Iron Works merged and formed Wheeling Steel Corporation. Wheeling's most important products include aluminum, bronze, chemical products, glass, iron and steel, metal stampings, plastics, and tin plates. The city is also a coal shipping center. One of the most important industries is tourism which attracts visitors with its parks, historic sites, and local events like the "Jamboree USA", a weekly country music show at Wheeling's Capitol Music Hall.
