South Charleston, West Virginia

South Charleston was established in 1907 and later incorporated 1917. Occupying 8.3 square miles, South Charleston is a city in Kanawha County, West Virginia with an estimated population of 14,000. Largely a farming community until 1914, with the advent of World War I, several chemical production operations began. In 1925, the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Company moved to South Charleston and began operations in buildings acquired from the Rollins Chemical Company. Eventually the Carbide Plant expanded along the river-bank and spread out to include the mile-long Blaine Island. Currently known as a division of the Union Carbide Corporation, the company was a producer of more than 400 chemicals, plastics, and fibers from derivatives of natural gas and petroleum. In an area overlooking the city the Union Carbide Technical Center was established. Today, South Charleston’s major employers include Thomas Memorial Hospital, Dow Chemical, City of South Charleston and Bayer Material Science.
