Nitro, West Virginia

Nitro is a city in West Virginia, situated along the Kanawha River. Occupying 4.1 square miles, Nitro lies primarily in Kanawha County with the remainder in Putnam County. The city is home to approximately 7,000 residents.

Formally incorporated in 1932, the creation as a community began during the later stages of World War I. The United States government selected Nitro as the location to develop what would become the world's largest gunpowder plant. After nearly 12 months of construction, the plant began operations under the management of the Hercules Powder Company. At the plant's peak production of 350 tons of explosives per day, employment reached 20,000. While the gunpowder plant was being constructed, a fully functioning community was also being built. After the war, the plant was shut down and little evidence of the facility remains on the ground today. The chemical plants in the area were able to fulfill this function during World War II, on a lesser scale. The city has since become known as the "Magic City", or a "Living Memorial to World War I".
