Wenatchee, Washington

The City of Wenatchee is the county seat of Chelan County, Washington. Located at the juncture of the Wenatchee and Columbia Rivers, Wenatchee is the second largest city in the state, and has a population of about 31,900. Apple growing and processing has been a dominant industry for more than a century, giving Wenatchee its nickname, "Apple Capital of the World." Manufacturing, metal refining and shipping have also played a part in the local economy. Among the city's top employers are Wenatchee Valley Medical Center, Stemilt Growers, Inc., and specialty electronics manufacturer Souriau PA&E, Inc. (formerly Pacific Aerospace & Electronics).

In 1888, the town was formally platted, and by 1893 had grown large enough to incorporate as a city. In 1893, the Great Northern Railroad came through the Wenatchee Valley, and the Mathison family established a homestead and orchards on Stemilt Hill. Stemilt Growers, Inc. was organized to sell the family's crops of apples, pears and stone fruits. Today, the family-run business has expanded to several locations, and includes the Stemilt Creek Winery. The Rock Island Dam, built in 1936, reduced flooding and provided hydroelectric power to the city, increasing the possibilities for manufacturing. The Aluminum Company of America built an aluminum smelter in 1952. Alcoa's Wenatchee Works currently occupies a 2,700-acre site above the dam. In 1948, Columbia Fruit Packers incorporated, taking over a warehouse of the former Wells & Wade Fruit Company. Columbia operated a cherry and apple packing facility in Wenatchee until 1997.
