Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver is a city in Clark County, Washington. Located on the Columbia River, Vancouver is the county seat of Clark County, with a population of approximately 161,700. Originally a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company, Vancouver was incorporated as a city in 1857. Lumber, fur, ships and aluminum are among the products that Vancouver has produced over the years. During the early 20th century, shipbuilding became a vital industry in Vancouver. The Standifer Steel Shipyard built ships from 1918-1921. In 1942, Kaiser Company opened a new shipyard to produce ships for the war effort. The yard closed after the war and was sold to Gilmore Steel around 1960. From 1849 until 2010, Vancouver was also home to the Vancouver Barracks, a U.S. Army post. One of the activities of the barracks during World War II was the operation of a spruce mill which provided plywood for airplane construction. The barracks site and its historic buildings is now operated by the National Park Service. ALCOA operated an aluminum smelter from 1940 to 1985. The property is currently owned by the Port of Vancouver. As heavy industry has declined in Vancouver towards the end of the 20th century, much of the waterfront area is being redeveloped for residential and other uses.
