Everett, Washington

Everett is a city in Snohomish County, Washington. First settled in 1861 and incorporated in 1893, Everett is the county seat, with a population of just over 103,000 residents, making it the largest city in Snohomish County. Mining, timber and railroads dominated Everett's early development. Top employers today include Boeing, Naval Station Everett, and Providence Regional Medical Center, which traces its roots to two hospitals established in 1894 and 1905. Everett is also home to several institutes of higher education, including City University and Trinity Lutheran College.

In 1890, the Everett Land Company was incorporated for the purpose of developing a new industrial city on the Snohomish River, to be named Everett after the son of one of the investors. The Great Northern Railway ran a line through in 1893, the same year of Everett's incorporation. The waterfront area developed as an industrial district, and wood products were a chief commodity. Weyerhaeuser opened its first Everett mill in 1901, and by 1918 had been joined by numerous others, including the Clough-Hartley Company, Clark-Nickerson Lumber Company, and Robinson Manufacturing. Puget Sound Pulp and Timber Company was founded in 1931, became Soundview Paper Company in 1935, and Scott Paper Corporation in 1951. Scott merged with Kimberly-Clark in 1985, which recently announced it will close the Everett mill in early 2012. After World War II, Everett began developing other industries as well. Boeing began its Everett assembly plant, the world's largest building by volume, in 1966, and currently produces major assemblies for its 747, 767, and 777 aircraft. A more recent addition to Everett's waterfront is Naval Station Everett, which opened in 1994. The station is homeport to seven ships, including the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.
