Centralia, Washington
Centralia is a city near the confluence of the Skookumchuk and Chehalis Rivers in Washington. Located in Lewis County, Centralia has a population of about 16,300. Originally founded as Centerville in 1875, the town changed its name to Centralia in 1891. Tourism, centered on the historic downtown district and its numerous antique shops, has become a key industry. There are also a number of well-established small manufacturers, including Centralia Knitting Mills, Geier Glove Company, and Darigold, Incorporated.
Centralia's founder was a free African-American man named George Washington, who came to the Pacific Northwest in 1850. Though legally unable to file a claim himself, Washington's foster father placed a land claim and later sold the property to Washington. The Northern Pacific Railroad ran a line across the property in 1872, inspiring Washington and his wife to register a town plat and begin selling lots. As the midway point between Seattle and the Columbia River, the town grew quickly. The railroads remained a vital link to markets for local produce and timber, earning Centralia the nickname of "Hub City". Union Depot, built in 1912, is still in service and has recently been restored. Firms such as Centralia Shingle Mills, Wooden Eave Gutter and American Brass & Foundry flourished at the end of the 19th century. Mining remained a key industry until the 21st century, when the Centralia Coal Mine, operated by TransAlta closed down in 2006. The Centralia Big Hanaford power plant, which burned coal from the mine, put its first boiler online in 1972. The coal-fired units are currently scheduled to be shut down by 2025.
