Bellingham, Washington

Situated on Bellingham Bay, the city of Bellingham is the twelfth largest in the state of Washington with a population of approximately 80,000. The protected Bellingham Bay was named after the controller of the Royal Navy’s storekeeper account in 1792, Sir William Bellingham. At the turn of the 20th century, four area towns including Bellingham, were consolidated to create one larger city which resulted in Bellingham officially becoming an incorporated city on November 4, 1903.

The Fraser Canyon Gold Rush of 1858 brought an influx of settlers from California as the small mill town became a busy seaport overnight. At approximately the same time, Henry Roeder discovered coal on the northeastern shore of the Bellingham Bay which led San Francisco investors to establish Bellingham Bay Coal Company. At the mine’s peak during the 1920s, 250 miners were employed and over 200,000 tons of coal were dug annually. Other local companies of this era include Whatcom Falls Milling Company, Georgia Pacific Pulp & Paper, and Brooks Lumber Company. In 1955, Tosco Refining was founded and soon became a large, national petroleum refinery. Today, Tosco operates the Ferndale Refinery located in Bellingham. Some of the largest employers located in Bellingham include Western Washington University, Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center, and Sodexo.
