Aberdeen, Washington
Aberdeen, known as the “Gateway to the Olympic Peninsula”, is a city in Washington state. Founded in 1884 and named for a local cannery, Aberdeen today has a population of nearly 17,000. Aberdeen is the largest city in Grays Harbor County, located at the innermost point of the harbor. Lumber and fishing are the primary industries, with major employers including Sierra Pacific Industries, which operates a sawmill and co-generation plant in Aberdeen, The Simpson Door Company and Washington Crab Products. Visitors to Aberdeen can visit the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport, the home port of the Lady Washington, a replica of an 18th-century merchant sloop which serves as Washington's State Ship and has appeared in several movies.
Aberdeen was incorporated in 1890 and its first sawmill began operations in 1895. By 1900, Aberdeen had acquired a reputation as a rough-and-ready lumber town, with high rates of crime and vice. One local character, Billy Gohl, became a Sailor's Union Agent in 1903, and was convicted of two murders in 1910, though rumor put the number at 40 or more. Regardless, the lumber industry in Aberdeen continued to grow. The Anderson Middleton Lumber Company opened a sawmill in 1906. The old mill building was destroyed by fire in 1981. The Harbor Plywood Company was founded in 1925. Despite a 1928 fire which destroyed most of the mill, Harbor Plywood was the largest plywood mill in the world by World War II. The company was liquidated in 1958. Weyerhaeuser also operated a sawmill in Aberdeen until 2005. The lumber industry has declined since the 1970s, and in recent years, the city has begun to invest in other industries, opening a biodiesel plant in 2007. Local cranberry growers also participate in the Ocean Spray growers' cooperative.
