Yorktown, Virginia

Yorktown is a census-designated place located in Virginia and serves as county seat of York County. The area is well known as the site of the siege and surrender of General Cornwallis to General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Today, Yorktown is part of a significant national resource known as the Historic Triangle, a preserved area that was one of eight original shires formed in colonial Virginia.

Founded in 1691 as a shipping port for tobacco, Yorktown’s strategic location along the upstream portions of the York River and its access to Chesapeake Bay played an important role in the area’s development. The western shore above Yorktown became a choice location for the U.S. Navy during World War I, with over 13,000 acres appropriated to create the original “naval mine depot”. Many military installations are still located in Yorktown today, including the US Navy Fuel Oil Depot and a United States Coast Guard Station. Over the years, Yorktown’s economy also relied upon the refining industry which was largely comprised of BP Amoco Virginia and the Yorktown Refinery. BP Amoco was constructed in the 1950s and covers 600 acres on the north side of Goodwin Neck Peninsula. The facility continues operations today and is capable of refining over 55,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
