Franklin, Virginia

The city of Franklin is located in southeastern Virginia and is home to approximately 8,000 people. The Blackwater River runs along the eastern boundary of the city and has played an important role in the industrialization of the community over the years. In March of 1876, Franklin officially became an incorporated city of Virginia.

Franklin’s humble beginnings can be traced back to the 1830s, when the area served as a railroad stop along the Blackwater River. Direct access to the river allowed goods to be transported to and from the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. The 20th century brought considerable growth to Franklin when three local brothers purchased a saw mill and began operating under the name of Camp Manufacturing Company. Camp Manufacturing produced lumber, brown packaging paper, and bleached paper, and during the 1950s, the company merged with Union Bag Camp Paper Corporation. After the merger, the company was locally known as “Union Camp”. The corporation thrived in Franklin until 1999, when it was acquired by International Paper. Other businesses attracted to Franklin over the years include Hercules Powder Company and Western Craft Corporation.
