Salt Lake City, Utah is the most populous city in the state and lies surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest, and the steep Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges on the eastern and western borders. Near the turn of the century, gold prospectors discovered oil in Salt Lake City, giving birth to the community’s petroleum industry. Utah Oil Refining Company was one of the first petroleum-related organizations operating in Salt Lake City and in following years, American Oil Company, Standard Oil of California, BP Amoco Utah, and Chevron Utah opened facilities in the city. The modern economy of Salt Lake City is now comprised of government, trade, transportation, utilities, and business services. The city has also developed into a strong outdoor recreation tourist industry based primarily in skiing, and was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics.
