Provo, Utah

Located 43 miles south of Salt Lake City along the Wasatch Front, Provo is the third largest city in Utah with a population of approximately 112,000. Provo serves as county seat of Utah County and is home to Brigham Young University, one of the largest private higher education institutions in the United States. Provo was originally called Fort Utah when it was settled in 1849 by 33 Mormon families. The city was renamed "Provo" and was formally incorporated in April of 1850.

Since its incorporation, Provo has served as the focal point of Utah Valley industry, commerce, and government. In 1875, Brigham Young University was founded and has since generated a high-technology industry in the city. Agriculture, mining, and the Provo Woolen Mills were Provo's commercial staples at the turn of the 20th century. The community's proximity to a major water source and two railroad lines led to the construction of the Ironton Steel Mill, the predecessor of Geneva Steel. Geneva Steel was a subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation and its success made Provo the second largest city in Utah. Today, Provo is home to more than three dozen restaurants and a handful of shopping centers, as well as several international companies including Action Target, APX Alarm Security Solutions, and Novell.

For years, asbestos containing products were commonly used in manufacturing, industrial, and construction sites such as those located in Provo.
