Located 90 miles east of Dallas/Fort Worth, Tyler, Texas is a city in and the county seat of Smith County. With an estimated population of nearly 97,000, Tyler has grown to be the largest community and considered the advanced manufacturing, health care, educational and retail center of East Texas. Despite the importance of the railroads, agriculture long remained the mainstay of Tyler’s economy. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, cotton, truck farming and fruit orchards were the leading cash crops in Tyler. By the 1920s, the rose industry had developed into a significant business, and by the 1940s more than half the supply of rose bushes in the United States was grown within ten miles of Tyler. In 1930, the East Texas oilfield was discovered and Tyler emerged as an important regional center for the oil and gas industry. By the mid-1960s, Tyler had 125 manufacturing plants employing 8,000 workers. Some of the significant industries during this time included aluminum foundries, petroleum and chemical plants, concrete block plants, machinery manufacturers, and air-conditioning and refrigeration plants. Roses, other horticultural production, and cattle and hay production accounted for most of the agricultural industry. Today, Tyler's manufacturing sector includes Tyler Pipe, a subsidiary of McWane Inc.; Trane, this plant was originally built in 1955 by General Electric; and Delek Refining, a Crown Central Petroleum subsidiary.
