Situated on the edge of the piney woods region in southeast Texas, deep within the Big Thicket National Preserve, Silsbee, Texas is a city in and the commercial center of Hardin county. Silsbee is located about fifteen miles northeast of the Port of Beaumont on the Texas Gulf coast and is within driving distance of the Houston metropolitan area. Home to more than 6,000 residents, Silsbee offers a hometown ambience mixed with modern conveniences set in a natural environment. Some of the major attractions in Silsbee are the Ice House Museum, Kirby Hill House, Pelt Farm Museum, and Village Creek State Park.

In 1900, the Kirby Lumber Company was established. This business would eventually become the main employer and the pillar of the Silsbee economy. As the timber and railroad industry expanded around Silsbee, so did the number of small businesses. In 1906, Collier, N.A. Cravens and others established the Silsbee State bank. In the 1920's the Britton-Cravens Lumber company was formed and began selling lumber for the development of new homes and businesses in the Silsbee area. By the mid-1950s, new technology came to the timber industry when the Kirby Lumber Company put into operation the world's largest automated Southern Pine Mill. In 1960, Silsbee’s population grew to approximately 6,200 people and by the end of the 1970s, the city's population exceeded the 7,000. It was not until the 1980s that Silsbee would see its greatest loss of population coinciding with work force cutbacks at the Kirby Mill. Today, the mill is back in operation under Louisiana Pacific. Some of the major companies in Silsbee are Mead Westvaco, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, South Hampton Refinery and the Temple-Inland Mill in nearby Evadale.
