Situated between the Hill Country and the Coastal Plain, San Marcos is a city in and the county seat of Hays County, Texas located on the Interstate 35 corridor—between Austin and San Antonio. Founded on the banks of the San Marcos River in 1851 and incorporated in 1877, the San Marcos area is considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Northern Hemisphere. The eastern region of San Marcos is blackland prairie ideal for farming; the western region consists of grassy rolling hills often marked with cacti. San Marcos is located at the heart of the advanced technology corridor linking Austin and San Antonio. During the twentieth century, San Marcos experienced significant growth. Wartime demand forced the town's industry to diversify, and with the emergence of a manufacturing and light industrial sector, the town began to grow. It was reported after World War II, that the financial resources of San Marcos had increased 500 percent from prewar levels. In the 1960s, with the establishment of Aquarena Springs and Wonder World as important attractions, the tourist industry became an emerging source of income for the city's economy. Also, the education industry became the largest industry in San Marcos with the growth of Southwest Texas State University (now called Texas State University), and the creation of the Gary Job Corps Training Center. Growth continued through the 1970s. Industrial development continued; among the 400 businesses recorded by 1980 were manufacturers of furniture, sheet metal products, plastics, woolens, lighting fixtures, telecommunication devices, baked goods, construction materials, and tortillas. Also, Austin's emergence as a regional metropolitan center is another cause of the remarkable growth of San Marcos.
