Orange, Texas
Orange, also known as the "Gateway City", is located in and the county seat of Orange County and nestled in the southeast corner of Texas. Founded in 1836, Orange is a deep-water port (to the Gulf of Mexico) situated on the west bank of the Sabine River, which separates the states of Texas and Louisiana. Home to nearly 20,000 people, Orange offers a rich history, world-class culture and small town charm. `
By the late 19th century, Orange was the center of the Texas lumber industry boasting 17 sawmills within the city limits. Shipbuilding during World War I contributed to the growth in Orange’s population and economy. World War II provided another boost when a U.S. Naval Station (decommissioned completely in 2008) was installed and additional housing was given to thousands of defense workers, servicemen and their families. Three shipyards were still in operation in 1949, and the United States Navy maintained a fleet of more than 140 ships berthed in the Sabine River. Petrochemical industries developed during this postwar period, and U.S. Steel built facilities in the area as did other industries and businesses. Orange, along with Beaumont and Port Arthur are considered part of an industrial Golden Triangle which became a major manufacturing center as well as a seaport. Today major industries in the area include petrochemical products, steel fabrication, shipbuilding, rubber products, paper products, and plastics.
