Nederland, Texas

Situated seven miles southeast of Beaumont, Nederland is a city in Jefferson County with a population of approximately 17,000. Dutch settlers arrived at this site in 1897; Nederland's heritage is rooted in Dutch ancestry, which is how the name was derived. Nederland offers the peaceful atmosphere of a small community with the amenities of a big city. Local attractions and activities in the area include the Dutch Windmill Museum, the La Maison Acadienne, shops on Boston Avenue, and Nederland's annual Nederland Heritage.

Early settlers in Nederland established truck, dairy, and rice farms with no significant success. However, in 1901, the Nederland community would experience a sustained period of prosperity upon discovery of oil in the Spindletop oil field in Beaumont. Nederland would become the bedroom community for a burgeoning oil refining industry that would grow up in the area. The refineries also attracted a large population of blue-collar laborers into the area, and the community became heavily unionized. During this time Sun Oil Company and The Texas Company (later named Texaco) established plants in the area. By the 1920s, the Humphrey Oil Company and Pure Oil Company (subsequently Union Oil) built refineries nearby. Refineries and related petroleum industries have continued to be the mainstays of the Nederland's economy. Nederland grew quickly as a residential center to accommodate the population surge that occurred during the mid to late-20th century. Though the local economy was hurt by the declining demand for petroleum during the 1980s, the city's rated businesses increased to approximately 401 in 1984–85. Some of the major businesses in Nederland today include ATO Fina Oil Refining, DuPont Chemical, Huntsman Corporation, Motiva Enterprises, and Time Warner.
