Deer Park, Texas
Founded in 1892 and incorporated in 1948, Deer Park is a city situated in Southeast Texas in Harris County. Deer Park is bordered by the cities of Pasadena and La Porte to the east, south, and west, and by the Houston Ship Channel providing easy access to Greater Houston and outlying points of interest in the Bay Area and Gulf Coast. The town was named for the private park for deer that formerly occupied the site. Deer Park is the site where initial treaty documents securing Texas' independence from Mexico were signed following the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. For this reason Deer Park refers to itself as the "Birthplace of Texas". Deer Park is home to nearly 30,000 residents and considers itself a family-oriented, growing community. In 2010, Bloomberg Business Week named Deer Park "Best Affordable Suburb in Texas for 2010". Attractions in and around Deer Park include The Port of Houston, The Battleship Texas, Patrick's Cabin, and the San Jacinto Historical Museum and Monument.
Initially established as a farming and fruit producing community, Deer Park eventually became the site of refineries and toluene plants for the production of TNT. In 1928, Shell Oil Company broke ground on a new refinery; it produced ten million gallons of toluene annually. During World War II, the United States Maritime Commission contracted with the Houston Shipbuilding Corporation, a subsidiary of Todd Shipyards, to establish a $5 million yard at Irish Bend, near Deer Park. Industries include the manufacture of plastics, paper products, carbon, concrete products, and alkali materials.
