Austin, Texas

Located in the Texas Hill Country, Austin is the capital city of Texas and the Travis County seat. It offers a balance between nature, education, the arts, and commerce and is the cultural and economic center of the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area. With an approximate population of 790,000, Austin is the fourth-largest city in Texas and the 14th most populous city in the United States. The Colorado River flows through the heart of the city, creating a series of sparkling lakes that span more than 100 miles. Austin is recognized for its pristine beauty, historic buildings, art museums and galleries, and vibrant night life.
In 1839, the city was renamed after Stephen F. Austin, known as the father of Texas. Austin grew throughout the 19th century and became a center for government and education with the construction of the Texas State Capitol and the University of Texas. After a lull in growth from the Great Depression, Austin resumed its development into a major city in the 1980s and emerged as a center for technology and business. The proliferation of technology companies has led to the region's nickname, "the Silicon Hills", and prompted development that greatly expanded Austin. High-tech companies with operations in Austin include 3M, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, and Google. Austin is also an emerging hub for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with approximately 85 companies from this industry based in Austin. Some of Austin's largest employers include the Austin Independent School District, the City of Austin, IBM, St. David's Healthcare Partnership, Texas State University–San Marcos, and The University of Texas.
