In 1893, Alvin became the first incorporated city in Brazoria County which also makes it the oldest settlement in the county. Alvin began as a small Texas cow town and has grown into a community, with approximately 22,000 residents, that honors the past and strives for continued growth and development as a community. Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan's hometown is Alvin. Blocks of ice cut from frozen rivers and lakes in northern states were shipped to Alvin for use to keep the produce from spoiling. Eventually an ice house was established in Alvin to produce ice and the Alvin Box and Material Company was established to produce crates to store the produce during shipment. During the 1930's, oil was discovered in eastern Brazoria County and continues to play a big part in the economy today.
