Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is located in the southwestern corner of Tennessee just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the county seat of Shelby County. With an estimated population of 646,800, Memphis is the largest city in Tennessee and the 19th largest in the United States. Memphis, dubbed the "Home of the Blues" and the "Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll", is largely known for its cultural contributions. Many renowned musicians grew up in and around the Memphis and Mississippi Delta including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Muddy Waters, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Al Green, and many others. During the 1960s, Memphis was at the center of civil rights issues, most notably the location of a sanitation workers' strike. Also, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel, the day after giving his I've Been to the Mountaintop speech.

Memphis is intersected by two Interstate highways, seven major U.S. highways, and several freight railroads, accordingly its central location and transportation infrastructure has made the city an ideal location for business and industry. Recently, the service industry has become a significant segment of the city’s economy. Other industries that drive Memphis’ economy are financial services, food processing, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, entertainment and film, manufacturing, logistics and distribution, and tourism. Memphis is home to a number of Fortune 500 companies including FedEx Corporation, AutoZone Incorporated, and International Paper Company. Other notable companies or divisions operating in Memphis include Cargill Cotton (part of Cargill Incorporated) and Schering-Plough Consumer Products Division. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a private pediatric treatment and research facility headquartered in Memphis. Also, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLG&W), one of the largest municipal utilities in the United States, is a major recipient of low-cost power from the Tennessee Valley Authority.
