Sumter, South Carolina

Sumter is the largest city in Sumter County, South Carolina and bears the name of General Thomas Sumter, the "Carolina Gamecock" of the American Revolutionary War. Settlers first arrived in the 1740s and established their roots along the banks of the Wateree River, helping to give rise to Sumter’s agricultural industry. In 1845, Sumter became an official incorporated city.

Diversifying from its reliable agricultural base, Sumter began to transform into a major industrial center during the 20th century. Once a sleepy, farming community, Sumter took a leap into the future with the opening of Shaw Air Force Base in 1941. The base initially operated as a flying school for the U.S. Army Air Corps before being transferred to the U.S. Air Force and becoming home to the 20th Fighter Wing. F-16's dispatched from Shaw Air Force Base were the primary fighters used in the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990's. Today, Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Shaw Air Force Base, and Eaton Electrical are among the city’s largest employers.
