Beaufort, South Carolina

Prior to Beaufort’s founding in 1711, the city had been subject to numerous European explorations and attempts at colonization. Once settled, Beaufort expanded into an aristocratic center for the Low Country plantation economy and, at present, is the second largest city in South Carolina with a population of over 49,000. The city is best known for its scenic location on Port Royal Island and for its preservation of impressive antebellum architecture.

Beaufort’s attractive seaport was a very desirable location from the military perspective. In 1915, the United States Marine Corps began training recruits in the area, graduating more than 20,000 marines a year. Additional military establishments were launched, including the Marine Corps Auxilary Landing Field and United States Naval Air Station. Similar to other southern towns, Beaufort’s non-military economy depended on agriculture, lumbering, and commercial fishing. Today, Beaufort is an economically sound city, supported by clean manufacturing and large military establishments such as Paris Island Marine Base, a U.S. Naval Hospital, and the Marine Corps Air Station. A fast-growing tourist "industry" brings in new dollars, and the retired population, drawn by the climate, history, and unspoiled beauty, are new residents who add to the intellectual and cultural life in the city of Beaufort.
