Prior to Beaufort’s founding in 1711, the city had been subject to numerous European explorations and attempts at colonization. Today, Beaufort is an economically sound city, supported by clean manufacturing and large military establishments such as Paris Island Marine Base, a U.S. Naval Hospital, and the Marine Corps Air Station. A fast-growing tourist "industry" brings in new dollars, and the retired population, drawn by the climate, history, and unspoiled beauty, are new residents who add to the intellectual and cultural life in the city of Beaufort.
