Westerly is the westernmost town in the state of Rhode Island, located on the southwestern shoreline of Washington County along the Connecticut border. Founded in 1669 by John Babcock, Westerly is largely a beachfront community with nearly 23,000 residents. Beaches in Westerly include Weekapaug Beach, Westerly Town Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, East Beach and Watch Hill Beach.

Historically, Westerly's major industry was granite mining and stone-cutting. Westerly's quarries produced blue granite, as well as pinks and reds. The Smith Granite Company was one of Westerly's top employers until the quarries stopped operating in the 1950s. Examples of their work can be seen in the battlefields of Gettysburg and in city squares, municipal buildings and cemeteries throughout the United States. In 1967, The Guild Guitar Company moved production to Westerly until they were bought by Fender Musical Instruments in 1996 and production was moved to Corona, California. Today, Westerly's main industries include textiles and tourism.
