Wakefield, Rhode Island

Wakefield is a village in South Kingstown, a town in Washington County, Rhode Island. Together Wakefield and Peace Dale (also a village in South Kingstown) are considered a census designated place known as Wakefield-Peacedale, Rhode Island.

Wakefield is significant for being an early commercial and industrial center largely due to its location on the Saugatucket River and along Main Street (old Post Road). During the 18th century, a tavern, snuff mill and stagecoach stop were established. Industry and the community continued to grow into the 19th century. By 1822, Wakefield had approximately 60 residents, a textile mill, carding mill, grist mill, saw mill and a blacksmith shop. By the late-1800s, Wakefield's population had grown to approximately 1,500, major retail stores and businesses opened. South County Hospital was built in 1925. Beginning in the late 1950s, commercial activity in Wakefield migrated away from the central business district to new commercial areas on the periphery of the community. In the 1980s, Wakefield village was considered the largest shopping area in South County.
