Smithfield, Rhode Island

Incorporated in 1731, Smithfield has progressed from a small farming community to an urbanized industrial center and most recently to a predominately residential community with commercial and industrial development along Routes 7, 116 and 44. The town has retained large undeveloped lands, including several active apple orchards and farms. Smithfield, a town in Providence County, includes the villages of Esmond, Georgiaville, Mountaindale, Hanton City, Stillwater and Greenville and has a population of more than 20,500.

During the 19th century, old Smithfield was transformed from an agricultural town to a manufacturing center. The major drivers of Smithfield’s economy were the textile and cotton industries. Smithfield's textile industry continued to prosper until the 1930s. Throughout the early part of the 20th century, Smithfield's apple economy grew and the town eventually became known in Rhode Island as "Apple Valley". During the mid to late 20th century, Smithfield experienced a population boom of more than 300%. Accordingly, residential and commercial development dominated during this time including the construction of the Apple Valley Mall, Interstate Route 295, and Smithfield's sewer system. Today, Smithfield home to many large and small companies including one of Fidelity Investment's New England regional centers, a division of Dow Chemical, Uvex Corporation, and FGX International. Also, Bryant University, a private university with programs in business and the arts and sciences, is located in Smithfield.
