Rumford, Rhode Island

Situated along Ten Mile River, Rumford was established as a neighborhood of East Providence in 1643. Rumford is the site of the original East Providence settlement which contained many farms and mills. It has also been known as Seekonk Centre and East Providence Centre. Today, Rumford is considered a suburb of Providence.

Rumford was primarily an agricultural village until the 1930's with the exception of the Rumford Chemical Works which began operating in 1856. Rumford Chemical produced and shipped baking powder both nationally and internationally. At its height of success, around the turn of the century, Rumford Chemical spanned 300 acres of working farms and communities to sustain the factory workers earning the village of Rumford the nickname, “kitchen capital of the world.” The factory buildings have become rundown since its closing in 1968; however, in 2006, PK Rumford LLC purchased the old Chemical Works and is in the process of renovating the remaining factory buildings which occupy 8.3 acres and will accommodate apartments, condominiums, office space, retail shops, a restaurant and café.
