North Kingstown, Rhode Island
North Kingstown, best known as Rhode Island's "sea town", is located on the west side of Narragansett Bay in Washington County. Founded in 1674, North Kingstown is home to approximately 26,300 residents and is comprised of nine villages, with Wickford as the center of town and the seat of the local government.
Largely an agricultural community during the 18th century, North Kingstown was quick to embrace the textile industry during the 19th century. Textile mills established along the Hunt, Shewatuck/Annaquatucket, and Pettasquamscutt Rivers and North Kingstown quickly became a mill village centered community as the textile industry dominated during throughout this century and into the first quarter of the 20th century. By the late 1930s, the Quonset/Davisville military complex was constructed, once the home of the Naval Construction Battalions known as the “SeaBees”. Accordingly, the influx of personnel, first to construct and then to staff the big base, forever changed the community as it expanded to accommodate this increase in population. Also during this time, the automobile and the increased mobility that it afforded people allowed numerous summer cottage colonies, such as Saunderstown, Mount View, Shore Acres, Plum Beach, and Barber Heights, to develop where farms once stood making North Kingstown a summer resort community. Since the middle of the 20th century, North Kingstown has largely remained a residential community in nature. Due to its location along the harbor and beaches, North Kingstown continues to be a summer tourist destination and haven for pleasure boats. Also, with its old churches and quaint colonial shops and homes, North Kingstown remains a charming New England town.
