Newport, Rhode Island

Founded in 1639 and incorporated in 1784, Newport is a maritime city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County. With a population of nearly 27,000, Newport is the largest city on Aquidneck Island situated along Narragansett Bay. The Newport Bridge, which connects Newport to neighboring Conanicut Island across the Narragansett, is the longest suspension bridge in New England. Newport is a college town as it is home to Salve Regina University. The city is most known as a New England summer resort. The tourist industry has largely become Newport's major commercial enterprise. Notable attractions in Newport include the famous Newport Mansions, the Cliff Walk, the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and Fort Adams which hosts the annual Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals.

During the 18th century, trade and the export of rum, candles, fish, furniture, silver, and other value-added goods fueled Newport's economic growth. Newport's waterfront was active with more than 150 separate wharves and hundreds of shops along the harbor between Long Wharf and the southern end of the harbor. By the late 1700s, Newport had emerged as one of the five leading ports in colonial North America. The economic growth prompted a building growth which included hundreds of homes and many of the significant landmarks that are still around today, such as Trinity Church, the Redwood Library, and the Brick Market. Newport has one of the highest concentrations of colonial buildings in the United States. Beginning in the mid-1800s and early 1900s, wealthy southerners and some of America's wealthiest families, such as the Vanderbilts and Astors, were summering in Newport in their newly constructed "cottages" including The Breakers. Newport has long been associated with the United States Navy. It is home to the Naval Station Newport which houses the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center.
