The city of East Providence was the first settlement of Roger Williams, Rhode Island's founder, in 1636. The city was once part of Rehoboth and Seekonk, Massachusetts, before it was incorporated in 1862. Home to approximately 48,600 residents, East Providence is located in Providence county and considered a suburb of Providence. A large part of the city is bordered by water including the Seekonk and Providence Rivers to the west, Narragansett Bay to the south, and the Running and Ten Mile Rivers to the east. Today, the city consists of five identifiable neighborhoods, each with a distinct character: Phillipsdale, Rumford, Watchemoket, Kent Heights, and Riverside.

Popular recreational and historic attractions in the city include Haines State Park, which offers fishing, boating, and picnicking; and the Crescent Park Looff Carousel, one of the most elaborate early carousels in the nation. Recently, the city created a commission charged with facilitating the redevelopment of old industrial sites along most of East Providence's 14-mile coastline on the Seekonk River for residential, commercial, and light industrial purposes.
