Central Falls, Rhode Island
Located in Providence County and situated along the Blackstone River, between Pawtucket, Cumberland, and Lincoln, Central Falls was established as an independent city in 1895. Central Falls is largely a working class community, home to more than 18,000 residents. It identifies itself as a "City for all People." The city was recorded in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" as the smallest, most densely populated autonomous city in Rhode Island and the country.
This small city has a history of manufacturing and industrial development. Early on, colonists utilized the power of the Blackstone River to develop new industry. Central Falls was a producer of a variety of items such as brooms, aprons, art goods, badges, soda bottles, candy, stationary, tools, braid & hosiery, lace, webbing, belting, spools, rayon, mill supplies, monuments and knitting machines. At one point, Central Falls was called “Chocolateville”, after the chocolate factory established there in 1790. Some notable companies during the 1800s included Coats Thread Mills, Pawtucket Hair Cloth Company, and the Weyboset Textile Mill. Central Falls became one of the largest manufacturers of firearms in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Today, Central Falls economy is sustained primarily by a diversified manufacturing industry.
