Barrington, Rhode Island
Incorporated as an independent town in 1717, Barrington is in Bristol County and home to nearly 17,000 residents. It is part of what is known as the East Bay region which is comprised of the towns of Barrington, Bristol, East Providence and Warren. Barrington is surrounded by water on three sides boasting more waterfront land than any other town in the East Bay. Since the 1980s, Barrington has attracted a growing wealthy population, largely from academics, professionals and executives who work in Providence. In July 2005, Barrington was ranked sixth on CNN/Money and Money magazine's list of "The 100 Best Places to Live" in the United States.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Barrington Brick Works, a manufacturer of bricks used in construction worldwide, attracted many laborers particularly Italians who migrated to the United States. Their descendents still make up a significant portion of the town population. Other manufacturers during the 20th century included O'Bannon Corporation which was later bought out by Cranston Worsted Mills; Pilling Chain, manufacturer of imitation leather and zippers; Rhode Island Laceworks which continued operations until 1990; and the Neweth Rubber Company, producer of retread tires. Today, Barrington’s industry, which was always limited, has dwindled. The quaint town is most accurately identified as a commuter suburb characterized by its extensive residential neighborhoods and rich colonial heritage.
