Warren, Pennsylvania
Located at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Conewango Creek, Warren is a city in and the county seat of Warren County, Pennsylvania with a population of more than 10,000 people. Founded in 1795, the City was named for Major General Joseph Warren, a distinguished patriot. During much of the 19th century, lumber was Warren’s main industry. However, in 1875, David Beaty discovered oil in Warren while drilling for natural gas in his wife’s flower garden. Soon, oil would become the main source of Warren’s economy. Supported in the 19th and 20th centuries by the oil and lumber industries, more than 600 structures were built in Warren. These structures represent 25 different styles of architecture and may be viewed on a self-guided tour of Registered Historic District. Spanning 28 blocks, Warren’s Historic District is one of the largest in Pennsylvania.
Recently, Warren has experienced difficult economic times; however, it initiated the Impact Warren - Downtown Streetscape Revitalization Project, a riverfront development project in downtown Warren to create a streetscape reminiscent of the City's earlier days. The completed project will include new townhouses and senior citizen housing, new retail and commercial development, a parking garage, a convention center, and bus depot. This project, coupled with the new commercial development in North Warren, may help revitalize the economy of the city. Some of the major employers in Warren include the United Refining Company, Allegheny National Forest, Whirley-Drinkworks, Superior Tire and Rubber Corporation, and Pennsylvania General Energy. Warren is also home to the headquarters of the Cornplanter State Forest, Chief Cornplanter Council, and the oldest continuously chartered Boy Scouts of America Council.
